Ray Guy Academy’s top kicker picks Clemson

Chattahoochee, Ga., All-State kicker Ammon Lakip, the top-ranked kicker in the Ray Guy Kicking Academy national standings, has committed to Clemson over Georgia Tech.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound two-sport star from Alpharetta, Ga., made the decision on Sunday night. Lakip’s father graduated from Georgia Tech, but he made the decision after taking an official visit to Clemson last weekend.

He also had made a visit to Auburn and Georgia Tech and had a scholarship offer from the Yellow Jackets.

The strong-legged Lakip made 14 of 20 field goals last fall and has 50-yard plus range. He had a game-winning 51-yard field goal in a high school playoff game. He put 82 percent of his kickoffs out of the end zone. He led Chattahoochee to the Class AAAA Georgia championship, kicking two game-winning field goals during the playoffs. Lapkip also converted 64 of 65 extra points.

Also a standout soccer player, Lakip was first recruited to Clemson by the Tigers’ soccer coaches where he made a recruiting trip last spring. However, he will focus only on football in college.

Lakip should compete immediately against Spencer Benton, who handled kickoff duties last season, and Chandler Catanzaro, a walk-on who made six of his last seven attempts as a freshman. He had struggled prior to the late streak.

Defending BCS champion Auburn made a “grayshirt” offer that would have delayed Lakip’s college enrollment until January 2012 so his scholarship would count toward next year’s recruiting class.
